The history of Valentine’s Day is a bit of a mystery. Some credit it's creation to the story of St Valentine - a figure who could have been one of at least 3 saints recognised by the Catholic church - whilst others attribute it to the ancient Pagan fertility festival of Lupercalia. Whatever the origin may be, the tradition of sending Valentine’s cards didn’t appear until much later, after the sending of Valentine’s Greetings began to appear in the 1400s, and became popularised in the UK around the 17th century.
These days, though less of a solemn or spiritual celebration, Valentine’s Day is still the perfect way to show someone you love a bit of extra appreciation - whether it’s typical Valentine’s Cards for your beau, or even the more recent trend for Galentine’s and Palentine’s treats! If you’re looking for a unique Valentine’s Day card with a bit of Illustrated flair - check out my round-up of love-filled greetings for every kind of Valentine.
